For the ocean, for our future.

OceanX was launched in 2016 with a bold ambition to explore the ocean and bring it back to the world. Founded by Ray and Mark Dalio as a nonprofit initiative of Dalio Philanthropies, OceanX began with a deep belief in the power of exploration and storytelling to connect people with our planet’s life-support system.

Aboard our first vessel, the MV Alucia, we combined cutting-edge scientific equipment with Hollywood-level production capabilities. We partnered with BBC Studios on Blue Planet II, contributing to an episode nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography, and co-produced the IMAX film Oceans: Our Blue Planet with BBC Earth. In 2024, we released OceanXplorers, a groundbreaking miniseries created in collaboration with James Cameron, National Geographic, and OceanX scientists that immersed viewers in missions from the Caribbean to the Arctic aboard our flagship research vessel, the OceanXplorer.

As the urgency to protect our ocean has intensified, so has our mission. Today, OceanX is a global nonprofit working to unlock the ocean’s sustainable potential—for the benefit of both people and planet. To us, that means transforming humanity’s relationship with the ocean from one of exploitation to one of mutual benefit. It means exploring the uncharted with boundary-pushing science and cultivating a new wave of ocean leaders through immersive education. 

From nutrition and medicine to climate resilience and economic opportunity, the ocean is brimming with potential. And with the majority of its waters still unexplored, the true extent of its promise remains unknown. Instead of stewarding this vast and vital ecosystem, humanity has long prioritized exploitation over understanding.

OceanX is on a mission to change that. Through a dual focus on science and education, we’re building a new paradigm where humanity and the ocean thrive together. We partner with researchers, educators, and decision-makers around the world to explore the unknown, expand global ocean literacy, and turn knowledge into action. Always driven by cutting-edge technology and creative, cross-disciplinary collaboration, we accelerate solutions to the ocean’s most pressing challenges and build momentum for long-term change.

When sustainably managed, the ocean can provide a bounty of benefits: global nutrition, climate stability, medical breakthroughs, renewable energy, and equitable economic opportunity. We’re working to accelerate science toward solutions that unlock these benefits, and to empower the education and data-driven decision-making needed to safeguard the ocean’s abundance for generations to come.
